The famous Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the superior Gangetic plain declining in Terai city of excellent Bahraich region of Uttar Pradesh, India. The excellent forest offers better connectivity or link between the tiger territories of Kishanpur and Dudhwa in Nepal and India. Katerniaghat Wild life Division Bahraich has been declared Sanctuary in the year of 1976 and also included in Project Tiger in year 2003. In the flora it is dominantly Sal Forest with its associates tree species like Terminalia alata (Asna) , Lagerstroemia parviflora (Asidha), Adina cordifonia (Haldu), Mitragyna parpiflora (Faldu) , Gamelina arborea (Gahmhar), Holoptelea intgrifolia (Kanju), Acacia catechu ( Khair), Pterocarpus marsupium (Vija sal) , Kydia calyina (Poola), Lannea coromandelica ( Jhigan), Toona ciliata ( Toon). Shurbs like- Murraya koenighii (Kath neem), Grawia hirsuta (Van Tulsi), Mallotus phillipensis (Rohni). Grass like – Phragmits karka(Narkul), Cynodon dactylon (Doob), Vetiveria zizanioides (Khaskhas), Erianthus munja (Moonj) etc.
7. How to get there
The main centre of the WLS, Katerniaghat is approximately 105 km. away from the district headquarter, Bahraich. From New Delhi, following routes can access the WLS:
- (i) By road: Delhi- Moradabad- Bareilly_-Shahjahanpur-Milani-Palia-Nighasan –Katerniaghat (approximately 500 km.) Alternatively, there are regular bus services connecting New Delhi and Rupaidiha via Nanpara . Nanpara is well connected with Katerniaghat by bus (approximately 72 km).
- (ii) By rail Delhi –Bareily (Northern Railways ) Mailani Bichhia (Northeastern Railways) , followed by bus to Katarniaghat . There are frequent bus services between Bichhia Katerniaghat. From Lucknow, one can take following routes.
- (i) By road Lucknow–Barabanki-Bahraich–Nanpara Mihinpurwa-Katerniaghat (approximately 240 km. ) Alternatively, Lucknow–Sitapur –Lakhimpur –Shardanagar –Bichhia-Katarniaghat (approximately 210 km.)
- (ii) By rail Lucknow-Sitapur-Lakhimpur –Mailani-Palia-Tikunia-Bichhia , followed by bus to Katerniaghat (approximately 340 km.) Alternatively, Lucknow–Barabanki–Gonda-Bahraich–Nanpara-Mihinpurwa-Bichhia followed by bus to Katearnighat (approximately 3291 km.) The Sanctuary is not very far from Dudwa National Park , the aerial distance being approximately 12 kms. The nearest airport is Nepalganj in Nepal, about 80 km from Katarniaghat . The next nearest airport is at Lucknow .An airport is Palia is likely to be operational soon.

By Road Way- From Lucknow through Bahraich to the Bichhia Rail – Closest Railhead Bichhia, situated on the Gonda-Bahraich division Railway line of NER, where the Gonda is located on the major Railway contour from greater Lucknow to the Gorakhpur through Air-Nearest Airport (Amausi Lucknow )- 210 km.
